320 SPYDA IS OUT TO PROVE WHY HE'S NEXT UP IN NYC'S THRIVING RAP GAME
Brooklyn-born rapper 320 Spyda didn't set out to be a skillful rapper at first. After becoming a student of the game and studying aspiring artist around him, he finally decide to jump on the court and hasn't stopped ever since. Spyda is not only a staple in his neighborhood but a super talented emcee too. After dropping "Nose Candy", a response to a controversial diss record, Spyda proved that he was a real contender for the seat at the table. His remixes to hit records like "Hit the Block" by Bizzy Banks and "S.H.Y.N.E freestyle" by Coach Da Ghost are some of the best underground remixes out. With his whole hood behind him, Spyda is on his way to the top. We had the opportunity of sitting down with him at The Plug's Palace to find out what's next for the Brownsville superstar and more.
1. Hey Spyda, let us know where you're from?
I’m from Brownsville Brooklyn, born and raised.
2. What made you want to start rapping?
The older guys from the hood made me want to rap after watching them do it. I felt like I could keep up with them and do the same thing. Once they heard me, they told me keep goin with it and it was up from there.
3. What song was like your first hit record?
My first real hit was “NO”, a joint I did wit my bro’s Sneaky and Maze. That was the first time we ever got a spin in a venue. But my first DOLEY joint was “Mopstick”. The kids love that one.
4. Early rap influences? Who are some of your hip hop favorites?
I grew up listening to a lot of Fabolous, Dipset, G Unit, Cassidy, Jadakiss, Jay Z. Pretty much anybody that was really RAPPIN rappin in the early 2000’s era. That’s where I get that aggressive freestyle shit from. My favorite rapper right now is Don Q though.
5. Your neighborhood seems to be a big part of your career and pride as a Brooklyn rapper. How important is it for you to put on for them?
I feel like my hood never really had much and it’s like every other neighborhood or block got somebody, if not a squad, puttin on for they side. You go to the P’s, you got DOD and them. You go to Garvey, you got Hoodstarz. Sally’s side got Poppa Da Don and them. We ain’t really had nobody over here goin crazy crazy so I felt like it was up to me and my guys to put the Trap on the map. Plus, before my bro Senio passed away, this the sh*t he wanted for all of us, so we're going to keep it going.
6. You've gotten on beats used by rising stars like Bizzy Banks, Coach Da Ghost etc. Are you creating friendly competition or are you simply a fan of their sound?
I mean, this game we playing is already a competitive sport. I just want to show that there's no beat too tough for me and that I can keep up with what’s goin on. They beats go super crazy too (Shoutout to Ghosty) so if I happen to come across the instrumental for some shit I like, i'll up it.
7. Let fans know what “320” is?
320 is CREAM TEAM. C is the 3rd of the alphabet, T is the 20th. The older bros, O Bucks, FREE Gab, E Ness, Ha Banks started CreamTeam a while back. They were heavy in the music thing, and they were from the town (NYC) so we all linked up. But when my guys and i hung out, we started saying '320' and it just caught on. And that was BEFORE the whole Chief Keef '300 era' so it’s not like we got it from them or nothing like that.
8. What do you think of the current hip hop scene?
It's lit right now. Everybody going crazy and putting numbers on the board. That's what I like to see. From the diss songs to the real hit singles, I love all of that. I feel like it’s the perfect time for us to jump in.
9. Who are some of your favorite underground artists? Or dream collabs?
I give everybody a listen at least once, no matter who they are or where they from. If I like it, I like it. Of course I bump my guys like 320, the Traps Dizzle Raw, Ezzy, Jayy Lav and them. But outside of us, I been listening to alot of Bizzy Banks, 26AR, Sheff G, Babiiiez, I even listen to Bronx drill artists like Sha EK and DThang. As far as collabs, I don't really have no special picks. If you tryna work and you nice, holla at me.
10. How would you describe your sound?
Honestly, I wouldn’t even know how to describe my sound. I be switchin it up. I could get on some super drill sh*t and then still turn around and bar you to death on an old school beat. I even got that slick talk for the ladies too. Plus I got club bangers for days. But I guess if I had to describe my sound though, I’d say I sound like me.
11. 2020 took an unexpected turn for the worse with the Coronavirus outbreak. Has the pandemic affected your music career at all?
The pandemic definitely affected this movement, in both good ways and bad. They closed outside and all the clubs were pretty much shut down and that’s how we used to do promo. We had DJ’s spinnin our records on the regular. But on the other hand, due to corona, a lot of mainstream artists took to Instagram live to tap in with fans and even tune them in to have them freestyle in front of 1000+ viewers. I took advantage of that. People like Paul Cain, Phresher, Nino Man and K Shine showed mad love wit that.
12. Any 2021 music goals?
2021, I’m tryna do everything I did last year times x10. I had a good 2020 from the collabs to the doley joints but i'm going to up it this time around. My biggest goal is to touch 100k views naturally, no dissin, no name droppin, none of that. Even if doesn't happen this year, I know it’s going to happen eventually.
13. What can fans expect from you in the near future?
Definitely expect to see a ton of hits, collabs, videos, freestyles and whatever else I got up my sleeve. I might even just give y’all a project this year who knows...
